What is electrostimulation?

We are currently seeing more and more rooms dedicated to electrostimulation opening in city centers. Electrostimulation chains like Body Hit have made it their specialty. It is today a well-being activity, which is beginning to be more and more widespread in our sports practices. It was formerly reserved for athletes, mainly great athletes, who needed to recover quickly from their injury to resume competitions. Today, anyone can start electrostimulation, young and old, women and men. A lot of marketing revolves around this activity with promises to lose weight quickly in 20 minutes a week, to have a very muscular body. But concretely, what does electrostimulation consist of?

What is electrostimulation?

Electrostimulation consists of sending an electric shock to the muscle in order to contract it. The strength of the electrical discharge sent depends on the desired intensity. The person doing an electrostimulation session performs gestures according to the muscle groups to be worked on at the time (pectorals, arms, thighs, abdominals, etc.). These gestures can be sheathing (the different shapes of planks), cardio (running on the spot, jumping, etc.) or strengthening (squeezing a ball, doing squats, etc.). Gestures that are indicated to you by a coach. A session is an alternation between position to be performed during the contractions (a few seconds) and rest (as many seconds), to be repeated approximately 8 times.

A special electrostimulation outfit

The person following an electrostimulation session wears a specially adapted outfit.  This electrostimulation outfit is equipped with electrodes scattered over the whole body: arms, pectorals, thighs , glutes, abs. This allows you to work several muscle groups at the same time. It consists of wearing a very tight top and a kind of shorts. A vest is also worn so that electrodes can be placed there.

An electrostimulation session lasts approximately 20 minutes

Electrostimulation sessions are relatively short, lasting 20 minutes. These 20 minutes are sufficient to obtain a certain tone and a certain firmness of all the muscle groups worked. The session should be done once a week. A session of 20 minutes thus carried out would be equivalent to a session of 4 hours of sport.

Electrostimulation is not a replacement for sporting activity

Electrostimulation is not a replacement for sporting activity. Already, it is advisable to practice an electrostimulation session once a week. Then, it is necessary to maintain a physical activity in addition, in particular a cardio activity.

Electrostimulation can be suitable for everyone

The advantage of electrostimulation is that it can be done by everyone, even seniors. It is indeed a method which can be gentle by putting low frequencies which make it possible to relieve certain pains. However, it is not recommended for people with a pacemaker and pregnant women.
