How to remove a grain of milia?

Blackheads, everyone knows them, there are a ton of products to prevent their appearance but also to remove them. But it is  true that the grain of milia is a bit of the poor relation of cosmetics. Very few brands talk about it. And yet, we all have grains of milia!

The grain of milia, which is also called a whitehead, is this kind of small wart that appears in different places on the face, at the level of the nose, on the forehead, on the chin and sometimes around the eye contour. . The grain of milium appears as a microcyst, which will measure a few millimeters, painless, and one has the impression of having small bumps on the face. This white point which is a source of embarrassment because, already we want to remove it but generally we do not succeed. Then because it does not give the sensation of having beautiful skin.

Here are some tips for fighting milia seeds.

What is a grain of milia ?

Concretely, what is a grain of milia? The milium grain is a skin microcyst that takes the form of a small white button, very hard, and generally sensitive if you have fun scratching it. Which is not a good thing to do at all. When you have a speck of milia on your skin, you have to leave it alone. It's simply sebum, sweat and dead cells that have accumulated in a pore, under the surface layers of the skin.

The milium grain is thus the cousin of the blackhead, except that the latter is the fruit of the sebum which remains on the surface of the skin, at the level of the pore, and which, in contact with the air, turns black. As the sebum remains under the skin, it does not change color and keeps its color a little white. Thus, as simple as it is to extract a blackhead, the grain of milium is almost impossible to extract. Otherwise, you have to be equipped.

You should know that the grain of milium can come with other grains of milium, and thus constitute a kind of plaque on the skin. Apart from the unsightly side, it's not very serious, each grain of milium can be removed one by one.

How to fight milia seeds ?

To fight against the arrival of milium grains, you will have to use the same methods as those used to prevent the arrival of pimples and blackheads . Because the source is the same: excess sebum on the skin, or sweat and dead cells.

  • it is necessary to thoroughly cleanse the skin, purify it. The skin of the face must be perfectly clear every day, morning and evening. To cleanse your skin, you can use micellar water or toner .

  • Exfoliate your face once a week to remove dead skin cells, or twice a week if you have oily skin.

  • do not hesitate to make masks specially adapted to oily skin once a week. This will allow you to absorb the excess sebum produced by your sebaceous glands.

  • do not use products that are too greasy, which will clog the pores of the skin.

  • if you use makeup for men , you will have to cleanse your skin well at night before going to bed (so as not to clog the pores).

Is there a treatment for milia seeds?

Unfortunately no, there is no particular treatment against milium grains. For the simple and good reason that the grain of milium is formed with the sebum and that in addition, after a certain time, it tends to disappear. So it's true that it can be particularly embarrassing if you are prone to numerous milia on your face, and on a regular basis. It's not very aesthetic, it gives the feeling of not having beautiful skin. But there is no treatment, in the form of medication, to take to prevent their appearance.

The only thing you can possibly do, if you cannot remove them at home (I give you advice below), is to make an appointment with your dermatologist who will remove them for you.

What should I do if I have a speck of milia in my eye or along my eyelashes?

If you have a speck of milium in your eye, either near the eye or on the eyelid, I advise you to go to your dermatologist to have it removed. Do not try to remove it alone: already the visibility is reduced, but in addition the disaster could quickly happen. Let the professionals do it. You can also go to certain aesthetic centers which also have the habit of removing milium grains.

How to extract the grains of milium?

Unfortunately, the grains of milium are very hard and thus difficult, if not impossible, to extract by hand. They do not act as a blackhead where you just have to put your fingernails to remove it (although it is not at all recommended to do so for hygienic reasons). No, the grains of milium will not leave by piercing them, because they are not fluid enough. In effect :

  • the interior of the grains of milium has hardened,

  • the grain of milium is covered with skin, which does not pierce, which is also hard.

So if you try to pierce it, you will have a nice red mark on your face!

Extraction of milium grains by needle

It is thus necessary to have recourse to a small needle, sterilized of course, to bring out this mass of sebum. But be careful not to cut your skin too much. Concretely, this is called an excision. Some comedone extractors also have a point-shaped tip for removing milia.

If the grain of milium is located near the eye, it is strongly recommended not to act alone and to call on professionals. The aesthetic centers thus have the habit of removing the grains of milium. Dermatologists can also do this.

To remove the milium in this way, you must make a tiny opening in the surface of the skin, at the edge of the whitehead, and push the contents of the milium into this opening (with your fingers or a comedone puller ).

This pack features six different surgical grade stainless steel blackhead remover tools. You can use it on all parts of your face and body.

Extraction of milia seeds with salicylic acid

You can also use products based on salicylic acid to remove the milia, but be careful, this product can be irritating, it is advisable to test the product beforehand on a part of the skin. Salicylic acid-based products will indeed help exfoliate the skin. But it will be necessary to use these products over a certain period of time to remove the grains of milium.

The extraction of grains of milia by exfoliating it

The benefits of facial scrub are well known for deep cleansing your skin, but it is also known to extract milium grains. The advantage of making a scrub to remove a grain of milium is that it will treat it gently, without risking damaging your skin and causing redness. However, it will take some time.

To do this nothing more, you will have to use your classic facial scrub product. You do not have any ? Run quickly to buy a facial scrub product, it is a treatment that it is advisable to do from once a week to once every ten days depending on your skin type. To remove a milium speck this way, here are my tips:

  • take a tiny dab of exfoliating product and apply it directly to the grain of milium, making small circular movements with your fingers for 2 to 3 minutes.

  • repeat the operation morning and evening, until the grain of milia comes out on its own.

Indeed, by exfoliating it morning and evening, you will simply gradually remove this hard skin that covers this mixture of sebum and dead cells. It takes about 10 days.

If your milia are on your body, then you can opt for a body scrub, like the ones I recommend below:

Scrub made with slivers of apricot kernels. Apply to damp skin with circular massages, ideally in the shower (no need to press too hard, the grains are quite exfoliating), then rinse with water.

Extraction of milia grains with a towel

Yes, you read it correctly, it is possible to remove a grain of milium with a towel, but on condition that it is very rough. You can also use an old washcloth to do this. Why use this type of product? Because as they have lost their suppleness, they will act a bit like a scrub product. But without it costing you the purchase of a scrub product.

To use a towel to remove a grain of milium, there is nothing simpler:

  • rub the grain of milia with the towel, making circular movements, for a few minutes

  • repeat the gesture morning and evening.

As for the exfoliation, the hard skin will thus yield after a few days, in a natural way.

The risks of removing milium grains at home

If you decide to remove your grain of milium yourself, be careful, go slowly if you use a comedone extractor or a needle. Don't damage your skin and, worse, create infections. Clean well before your utensil, disinfect it.

Natural remedies to remove a milium speck

If you are a fan of alternative medicine, know that there are also natural solutions to remove a grain of milium. Natural and gentle solutions, you won't have to use needles or exfoliating products that could damage your skin.

Thus, castor oil is a vegetable oil known to absorb excess sebum. Do not hesitate to apply a drop of ridin oil on your grain of milium every day, before going to bed for example. Castor oil is indeed very greasy and therefore very visible when applied to the skin.

Honey, which you will preferably choose organic, is also a good remedy against milium grain. Like castor oil, apply a dab of honey directly on the grain of milium which you will then leave for a good ten minutes. As if you were making a mask for your grain of milia!
